Step-By-Step: Setting Up Your Josh Micro

Before you can set up your Josh Micro, you need to take it out of the box. No matter the placement or project, setting up Micro is a simple process thanks to the Josh application directing you every step of the way. That being said, whether you are connecting Micro to a network via POE or WiFi, you will need to have downloaded and be logged into our app to get started. We recommend plugging in your Micro at the location you plan to use it from the start and to set up one Micro at a time. If possible, it is always best to install using POE.

Step 1

Launch the Josh app and log in.

Step 2

Swipe to the left, or tap on the menu icon in the top right corner of the screen to open the devices sidebar. Tap the “Add Micro” button of the screen.

Step 3

Ensure that your phone is connected to the same WiFi network as the rest of your smart home devices. Micro will be configured on the same network. Select which household Micro will be configured on from your list of accessible homes.

Step 4

Select which installation method you will be proceeding with. We recommend setting up Josh Micro one at a time. For wall mounted Micros, please use the provided POE adapter and wall mount hardware.

POE — Step 1

Connect Micro to the POE adapter with an active ethernet connection. Wait for it to power up before tapping on “Continue.”

POE — Step 2

Wait for the list of POE-connected Micros to populate. Tap on “Ping” to locate a specific Micro by having it play a looping sound. Select the corresponding arrow to continue setting up that specific Micro.

Micros being set up on WiFi that timed out during initial setup will also show up on this list.

POE — Step 3

Josh Micro will begin downloading all information it needs about your home for proper setup, which includes correct room assignments and device placements. This process may take a few minutes.

WiFi — Step 1

Connect Micro to the provided power adapter with the included USB-C cable. Wait for it to power up before tapping on “Continue.”

WiFi — Step 2

Open your phone’s WiFi settings menu and look for a WiFi hotspot being generated by your Micro. Join the WiFi hotspot and return to the Josh app to continue.

WiFi — Step 3

Confirm that the correct Micro is being set up and tap “Continue.” If not, press the back arrow to view the list of Micros on the local network.

WiFi — Step 4

Select the correct WiFi network for Micro to join. This should be the same network that the rest of your smart home devices live on. If the network you are looking to join is hidden, tap on “Join Other” to manually enter the SSID. Tapping “Rescan” will refresh the list of available networks.

WiFi — Step 5

If the network that Micro is attempting to join has a password, enter it now.

WiFi — Step 6

Josh Micro will begin downloading all information it needs about your home for proper setup, which includes correct room assignments and device placements. This process may take a few minutes.

Step 5

Now that Micro is successfully connected to the home network, it is time to assign it to a physical location. By default, “Tech Closet” exists as a catch-all room. If a room doesn’t yet exist in the app, tap on “Create New Room.”

Step 6

If you’re creating a new room, don’t forget to specify which floor it is on!

Step 7 — Finish!

Josh Micro is all set up and ready to use. To customize specific touch interactions such as single taps and double taps, press on “Advanced Settings.”

Now that your Micro is up and running, try a few simple commands to get acquainted like “Okay Josh, what time is it?” or “Okay Josh, what’s the weather?”

Once Micro has loaded all of the information about your home, you can go ahead and start controlling your devices with hands-free voice control! Give a few commands like: “Okay Josh, dim the lights” or “Okay Josh, listen to the Beatles and close the shades.”
