Spreading Holiday Thanks & Cheer with Josh.ai Conditionals

Here at Josh.ai, we are grateful for our customers and for being in a position to continuously innovate their smart home experiences. One of the features that all of our dealers and clients are becoming increasingly thankful for is conditional programming, which offers limitless and flexible smart home possibilities. It is exciting to see that proactive automations based on changing conditions like the weather, time of day, device state, and more factors that Josh is monitoring can create true home intelligence!

For example, Josh users can intuitively create a ‘Welcome’ scene that activates differently depending on the time of day and what day of the week the entry doorbell rings. A ‘Good Morning’ scene can easily adapt based on if it is sunny, raining, or if it is below a specific temperature outside to adjust lighting, shading, thermostats, and music to ensure every day starts on the right foot.

As our team looks ahead to Thanksgiving, we wanted to share a few examples of conditional scenes to impress your family and friends this holiday season. Read on to learn more!

Scene 1: Welcome

The holidays are a time to come together and entertain loved ones. However, for hosts, it can also be a stressful time when you are trying to greet and prepare a festive meal. Josh and a sensor at your front door can help solve some of these challenges by activating a custom welcome scene that lets your guests know where to join the party while accentuating your decorations!

For example: Say your front door and great room area are somewhat far away from each other, you can create a scene that will trigger custom announcements in your entryway to welcome guests into your home and in your kitchen to alert you of your guest's arrival!

Step 1: Go to the Josh Scenes tab and create a new scene.

Step 2: Navigate to the Triggers portion of the Josh scene builder.

Step 3: Select the Automated Triggers section and tap on Add a Trigger.

Step 4: Select When a sensor state changes and add the sensor to your scene.

Step 5: In the Custom Command box, enter the announcement you want to make and were — For example,

Announce in the entryway, “Welcome! Please head down the hallway into the kitchen for some turkey and football!” and announce in the kitchen, “guests have arrived, prepare the gravy!”

This scene is not only simple to personalize, but all that is needed is a motion sensor or door station integrated with Josh to make the magic happen. From here, you can add lights, music, and more to set the perfect mood! There is no need to run around as the host when you are focused on preparing the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. Instead, use Josh to welcome your guests and excite them for the festivities to come!

Scene 2: Cozy Mode

Our next scene is perfect for clients who live in colder areas of the country that get to celebrate a white Christmas. If you want to roast chestnuts by an open fire or set the mood as the snow falls, this is a great scene to get in the spirit. Conditionals can be set so that specific devices activate and adjust depending on the weather outside. For example, turning on a fireplace when it gets below freezing or brightening your holiday lights when it is cloudy.

Step 1: Go to the Josh Scenes tab and create a new scene.

Step 2: Navigate to the Triggers portion of the Josh scene builder.

Step 3: Select the Automated Triggers section and tap on Add a Trigger.

Step 4: You can choose to activate your scene based on the temperature, weather conditions or both. For this scene — We will use the When temp falls below a threshold and set the temperature to be below freezing at 32 degrees.

Step 5: Go to Scene Actions, select Fireplace under devices, and choose the fireplace you want to turn on.

While just the start of a weather-based conditional, this type of activation sets the stage for you to customize the coziest of holiday experiences. ‘Tis the season to curl up with hot cocoa and loved ones so let Josh transform your surroundings without having to lift a finger. Your fingers should be busy opening presents anyway 😊

Scene 3 — Movie Time

Whether you are riding out a Turkey coma or enjoying a holiday classic, it is the time of year to enjoy a home cinema experience. With Josh, there is no need to flip switches or manually adjust your media room’s devices. Instead, program a conditional to turn off/dim lights, close shades (if the sun is out), and mute your nearby Josh microphones so they don’t accidentally activate due to any movie dialogue.

Step 1: Go to the Josh Scenes tab and create a new scene.

Step 2: Navigate to the Triggers portion of the Josh scene builder.

Step 3: Selected Automated Triggers section and tap on Add a Trigger.

Step 4: Select When a device state changes and select the TV that should trigger this scene. Make sure to select When the TV turns on to finish the trigger.

Step 5: Now head over the Scene Actions tab and select Add by Device Type.

Step 6: Select which lights you want to turn off/ dim when the TV comes on.

Step 7: Now write in the custom command box “If it is sunny out, close the shades in the ___ room and mute the Josh device in ___ room”

Once programmed, the TV turning on will execute this scene and adjust everything accordingly to set the perfect movie-watching mood. You can personalize this activation however you like with more devices, triggers, and responses. A fan favorite among the Josh team is adding the voice trigger, “Netflix and chill” 😉

The holiday season is a time to come together with friends and family, reflect on the past year, and look ahead at the joy to come. At Josh, we want to help you celebrate this time of year to your heart’s content with simple, private, and magical experiences!
