Scene Creation with Independence Day Edition

It’s that time of the year for us to celebrate the red, white, and blue here at! Whether you’re headed to a 4th of July parade, firing up the grill, or (safely) preparing a fireworks show in the backyard, Josh is here to help you set the perfect patriotic mood. 🇺🇸

First, make your way to either our web portal or IOS app. For the web portal, navigate to page, select Scenes -> Add Scene.

1. Scene Photo

A photo is automatically generated when you create a scene. Josh does its best to choose the right image based on what you call a scene, but you can also customize it. For example, we made our 4th of July photo an American flag, which looks great in the Josh portal and app.

2. Creating Scenes & Custom Triggers.

When you open the Josh Portal or App and create a new scene, the name you provide will be the default trigger. For example, if the scene is called “Good morning,” that’s what you say to activate the scene. You can always say things like “Set the scene to Good morning” or “Turn on Good morning” if you’d like, and those will also work.

That said, you can also add as many alternatives as you’d like. For our 4th of July scene, a few trigger options could be “Independence Day,” “I Love America,” “Born in the USA,” and more. We always suggest using simple words that are likely to be heard correctly to increase the chance of success.

❗️TIP — avoid uncommon words or abbreviations such as “Merica” as it might be misheard; instead, stick to “America” for a higher hit rate.

3. Custom Responses

With Josh, you can program scenes to respond with custom responses. For example, a default scene response might be, “You got it,” affirming the scene triggered. You can change this to respond with a simple beep, so Josh is less chatty. But when you get into custom responses, you can have much more fun.

First, you’ll notice you can provide multiple responses to a scene. Josh will pick one of these at random, making Josh less robotic. For example, your “Independence Day” scene could respond with “Happy birthday America” or “Go USA!”

4. Setting Actions

When creating a scene you can either, type your action into the write an action box or use the add by device type button to select specific devices. For more advanced users, using the custom command box can be a fun way to really personalize your scenes. However, for our 4th of July scene, we selected lights, tv, and audio systems using the add-by-device type button as well as the custom text box.

5. Microphone Actions

As an additional user interface feature, you can assign Josh Micros and Nanos to execute specific scenes with a single or double-tap. To try this out, navigate to Devices > Josh Devices > and tap on the settings icon for the microphone you want to configure, then assign a single or double-tap to your new scene, and you can trigger it easily!

Now that you know how to set up a custom scene… We’re excited to see how you Josh helps you celebrate this Holiday Weekend! 🇺🇸
