Name: John Trujillo
What do you do at Josh? I work on the NLP engine for the Micro. Our engine is not only behind having the Josh ecosystem understand a command a user says, but also understand all the ways that a user can give a command such as “turn on the kitchen lights.”
Where are you from originally? I’m from Queens, New York
Which office do you work in? I work in the Denver office.
What do you love about the smart home? I love that from the comfort of your home or from a library across the world, you can control a lot of the things in your house.
What are you most excited about over the next few years? I’m really excited about some of the technology in NLP that will be coming out in the following years. The NLP community has been working hard on things like speaker recognition, speech-to-speech synthesis, and reference resolution. This technology was considered a decade away five years ago, but look at where we are now.
iPhone or Android? iPhone but starting to warm up to Android.
What do you do for fun? I love exploring different types of wines, playing and watching soccer, learning to play piano, and reading about the most random stuff one can imagine. I would like to try out hiking and snowboarding now that I’m in Colorado.
If you could go anywhere, where would it be? Definitely Medellin, Colombia. Half my family is over there, and I would always try to visit on breaks.
Favorite restaurant in the world? Patacon Pisao — it’s this little Venezuelan restaurant deep in Queens whose food is so delicious that even when I’m full, I still want seconds.
Favorite IoT / smart home product? Josh, hands down!
What is your favorite feature of Josh? How natural it is to speak to Josh and having it understand.
Favorite books / reading material / websites? 1984 and Brave New World — anything dystopian or anything relating economics really.
