A Focus on Security
As more and more devices continue to get connected, and as more and more end-clients use these devices, there will be an ever growing focus on security. To be clear, security is a vague term, and can imply a number of different ideas. In this case, we believe the focus to be centered around data and user privacy and security. Many of the big tech companies have come under fire for the method at which they gather data as well as for what they end up doing with the data. Expect there to be a race for everything from enhanced network security to stronger voice recognition software to solutions focused on keeping data private and secure.
Local Processing and Edge Computing
For nearly the past decade, there has been a push to make everything accessible and available from the cloud. We expect this pendulum to swing back a bit in favor of processing some things locally. Devices such as Nest offer convenience and power by being run in the cloud. We’re finding that when it comes to the home, clients want to feel confident that they can still control their home when their internet is out. This is especially true in the luxury market, where clients pay for, among other things, reliability and security. Edge computing has become one of the buzzwords in IoT lately, and given the potential benefits, it could be something that can make local processing possible.
Automation — Beyond Voice
With the announcement that Amazon has shipped over 100 million Echo devices, it’s safe to assume that voice control is here to stay. As with any technology, society pushes for the new and exciting, and we’re already starting to see companies offer solutions beyond simple voice control. For example, here at Josh.ai, we announced a new revamped Josh app that introduces machine learning for home automation. To be sure, voice control still has a lot of untapped potential to change how we interface with technology. As voice continues to mature, it is great to see other early adopter technologies start to develop along with it.
